Photo tips for Capturing Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon is HUGE, immense, grand, spacious, deep, changing terrain, and a great tourist attraction. When taking pictures they aren’t always to sell, instead, being for your personal enjoyment. Finding ways to capture the whole Grand Canyon is impossible but creating images with depth or expansiveness is possible. Using what is in front of you to create the depth or height or contrast or changing terrain is very much possible.
Grand Canyon Photo by Eileen Ludwig
Finding trees and rocks to be in the foreground is a must to show the immense depth both down and out of the Grand Canyon in this picture. Finding the right balance of the rocky ridges and differing terrain with dark, light, red, and green helps to create the finish result.
Grand Canyon rocky ledges and greenery Photo by Eileen Ludwig
What is great about this picture is the shadows with the tree above and against the distance slope. The changing colors add interest. The tree really adds the depth. The hardest part with the Grand Canyon is the sky because it can wash out. Those photos you might want to Photoshop. This one is not but if I want to sell this photo, it would take some post production work.
Grand Canyon Serenity Photo by Eileen Ludwig
Love this picture because it fits in my theme of Serenity with the bench in the lower right and the tree. The railing and walkway brings back the memories of the walkways and the fragile nature of the trails. Many people travel here. To be able to sit and look at this scene with all the crevices and carving done of millions of year. The Dark and light contrast with the textures of the elements of the tree, walkway, railing, bench, and distance rocks comforts the eyes into awe of something so incredible to behold.
As you come into Grand Canyon from the East you get to see carving as it gets deeper and more rocky. This small river in the center of the picture (look inside the railing) and you see the work of nature over centuries.
Grand Canyon Red Rock Carved Tree Photo by Eileen Ludwig
This photo is great because of the tree twisted and wound from the wind and elements over the years in contrast to the Red Rock in the layers as we get to see more depth of the Canyon. The green trees and ledge on the right help us to comprehend the distance without really grasping the size. To truly capture the beauty of the red rock, wait for sunset to light up the red. I love seeing the wood created by wind and weather.
Finding the right pictures to bring home this beauty of nature can be yours by using all of nature to create your desired effect. These photo tips can bring you closer to finding your perfect pictures. Enjoy

Good tip on catching the depth of the canyon. Although the Grand Canyon is a beautiful spot it’s a challenge to convey just how extraordinary it is. Thanks for the tips.

I like the technique Eileen. At Namibia’s Fsh River Canyon, my first impression was it was so vast that a picture could not capture the scale of it. So there aren’t any trees around so I used scrub and flowers on the rim and placed those in my pic foreground. Similarly in Ethiopia when everyone was taking pics of rock cut churches by walking out of the cavern, I had to wait ages for the crowd to clear so I could take pics with the cavern opening framing my shots. Scale in vistas like Grand Canyon looks more impressive using these simple techniques.

Jim I have never gone so far as to pick things up and put them in a picture. I move around until I get the elements that make the picture. Waiting for people to move is time consuming BUT makes me stop and enjoy the scenery between gritted teeth. Scale is something that can be done with angling – no trees or anything else than it takes more creativity

You’ve done really well here. I get so frustrated with these “big” photos, when they look so absolutely amazing but you just can’t capture the same magnificence with a camera – but now I have a few tips!!!
