Photo Tips: Practice making videos and shooting pictures
The Talking Fountain at Universal Island of Adventures Theme Park is one of my favorite places to just relax, laugh, watch and enjoy the shenanigans of the Fountain, the kids, and others reactions.

I love the shape of the Fountain and the personalities behind Rock. They are playful with the kids who love to be squirted. People who throw money in the fountain many times, but not always, get the full sprouting of all the water works from the top, the mouth and otherwise.
Take the time to enjoy this rock. Yes it is a theme park. But this is the most thrilling adventure for those who don’t do roller coasters. This type of experience is one you remember
Practicing with new cameras on subjects you have access to and changing scenes is a good way to get expertise for when you REALLY want a picture and need the right skills. Preparation meets opportunity.
During the past year I have been trying many smaller cameras so I would have a camera with me no matter where I go. This photo was taken on June 17, 2010 using a Panasonic DMC-ZS6. I sold my Panasonic DMC-F27 on Amazon. The DMC-F27 had served me well during my cross country trip. the viewfinder was terrific but I felt I wanted a smaller camera. I wanted no excuse for not taking a picture.
As I tried out DMC-ZS6, it was so small and no view finder. I tried the Video too which was an interesting feature. I was moving away. At the end I am tilting toward the ground because I didn’t know where to shut it off or how. I have several other failed videos. My only complaint was no view finder or good way of holding the camera. I sold DMC-ZS6 camera on Amazon and got another one. Olympus sp800 had a great 30x zoom for getting far away shots. It had a great place to hold the camera. I like the video part of Olympus sp800 camera more than pictures.
Now I have sold Olympus sp800 camera on Amazon and bought a Panasonic ZS10 and so far I like the weight. I have gotten more used to the digital no view finder but like the manual setting and other nice settings beyond the last camera. I can zoom in and out while filming and that in itself is a very good thing. It is easier to navigate or maybe I have gotten more used to the digital world.
I need to go back and film this Fountain again with Panasonic ZS10. I want a much better video and pictures. I try to take pictures without people but for the video it is important to have them for the interaction. It is a practice and learn the instrument but it is also the techniques of taking pictures. It is just many pictures sewn together into a film. Many of the same things apply.
I can really stand going there and really enjoy watching and filming and figuring out how to get the best of what I enjoy. How can I capture that joy. I never know what the Fountain will say or do or if it will be great. This is not scripted. Some same phrases come out but it is never the same.
Jim McInosh theme for Magnificent Monday is Rocks I looked through my pictures and had many to use but finding one to talk about was my mission. The Talking Fountain jump to the top for your enjoyment.

Your photos are always so great. That’s one area I need to improve on – if my husband is not around, I either don’t take any pics or they are no good. Heading to the beach this weekend and I really need to concentrate on improving my picture taking skills!!

Jan, this is why I like putting these tips. Most people get so technical and yet it is the little things that help make a picture a great picture

I feel like I’ve gotten a pretty good handle on photos… but videos are a different story. Mine always turn out so awful!

Thanks Eileen,
Like you i have experimented with cameras since my first way back in 1999 would you believe. A Sony Cybershot with 1, 2 or 3 megapixel resolution and crappy video. But it took a lovely photo. I miss it.
Now I am on a Canon SX10 IS as I can stick it in a baggy pocket and I like the 20 times optical and I don’t want to go to twin lens and all the extra gear and weight. I think superzooms are going to improve remarkably over the next few years and 50 times optical with macro will become common.

And your post brilliantly interprets “Rocks” for everyone’s benefit. Love it.

Jim, I was thinking my first was 2006 but I had a 1 or 2 pix that I never really used because the pics were not very good

Really fun post!!! I have not been there but would love to visit this park!! I have not really tried video, that much. Prefering to stick to still images but your tips were really well thought out and user friendly! Really enjoyed this post!!

Jim, watching the videos again takes me back to the place in a way still pictures doesn’t – it is a joy to watch the fountain as I sit here in Air conditioning today
I often get in the habit of taking pictures of structures and scenery while forgetting that having people in the shots is important too!

Scott, I like structures without people but for interactive video, need something or someone interacting
